The 2024 MLB trade deadline, scheduled for 6pm ET this coming Tuesday, is less than three days away. We’ve already seen a few big names sell out over the past few days — Randy Arozarena to the Mariners, Jazz Chisholm Jr. to the Yankees, etc. — and you can be sure there will be more between now and the deadline. Here are some last words.
The Blue Jays are listening to Kiner-Falefa
Having already sold Danny Jansen, the Blue Jays are open to hearing offers for Isiah Kiner-Falefa, according to Sportsnet. Unlike Jansen, Kiner-Falefa is not a rental. He is signed through next season with a minimum salary of $7.5 million. Demand far outstrips the supply of entrants this deadline. It makes sense for Toronto to listen and see what the teams have to offer.
Kiner-Falefa, 29, is currently on the knee injury list, it should be noted. Players on the injured list are subject to trade, and Kiner-Falefa is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment this coming week. He is expected to return soon. Kiner-Falefa has his worst season by a mile and can play anywhere, even in his defensive position at third base.
Dodgers interested in Edman, Hoerner, Rengifo
The Dodgers are looking for infield reinforcements and are interested in Cardinals super utility man Tommy Edman, Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner, and Angels infielder Luis Rengifo, reports The Athletic. Edman hasn’t played this season after offseason hand surgery and a recent ankle injury. It’s unclear whether the Cubs intend to move Hoerner, who is signed through 2026.
Los Angeles now has Max Muncy, whose recovery from an oblique strain has been slow, and Mookie Betts, who is progressing as he recovers from a broken arm. Injuries to Chris Taylor (groin) and Miguel Vargas (forearm) have further curtailed their goals as a player. Even if he’s healthy, the Dodgers could use an infielder to play with Gavin Lux and possibly center field.
The Mets evaluated Taillon
After Kodai Senga calf injury over time, the Mets have checked in on Cubs righty Jameson Taillon, reports the New York Post. Taillon was tested in New York after spending two good years with the Yankees. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza was the Yankees’ bench coach at the time, so he and Taillon are familiar.
Sean Manaea has settled well out of his contract, meaning he will join Jose Quintana and Luis Severino as Mets starters in free agency. Senga, Tylor Megill, David Peterson, and the currently injured Christian Scott is the only Mets starter under contract/team control in 2025. Taillon is owed $18 million in both 2025 and 2026 and would fill a long-term need in the rotation.
Angels are listening for gifts for Rengifo, Ward
The Angels are listening to offers for outfielder Luis Rengifo and outfielder Taylor Ward, according to MLB.com. People around the game believe they will be moved before the deadline and The Athletic reports that the Royals are targeting both players. The Angels have already traded the rental of closer Carlos Estévez. Rengifo and Ward are both under club control beyond 2024.
Kansas City has won more games this season (57-48) than last year (56-106), and they sit in a game for the third wild card spot. They desperately need help at third base and in the outfield, two positions that Rengifo and Ward can address. The Royals will likely tighten up their offense between now and the deadline. A large one-stop shop business with Angels seems possible.
The surging Padres have acquired former shortstop Jason Adam from the Rays, the teams announced Sunday. San Diego will send three prospects to Tampa: RHP Dylan Lesko, OF Homer Bush Jr., and C JD Gonzalez. Adam, 32 years old, has a 27.8% strikeout rate this season and has shown that he can play any role (closer, setter, etc.). He is also under the club’s control until 2026.
Lesko, the highest level of the three expectations, was the No. 1 pick. 15 in the 2022 draft. He had Tommy John surgery shortly before the draft and has battled control issues since returning. Adam is the third known player the Rays have traded in the past few days, joining Randy Arozarena and Zach Eflin. Pete Fairbanks, Brandon Lowe, Isaac Paredes, and others could go next.
The Yankees, the Padres, others are in on Snell
The Yankees and Padres are among the teams that have been interested in Giants lefty Blake Snell, reports the New York Post. Snell struck out 15 Rockies in just six innings Saturday. Since returning from a groin injury earlier this month, he has a 0.75 ERA and has held opponents to a .104/.179/.169 batting line in four starts and 24 innings. You’ve been nice lately.
The Giants are 52-55 and 4.5 games out of the wild-card spot, and Snell is set to decline his $30 million player option for 2025 and re-enter the free agent market. San Francisco won’t be able to give him a qualifying offer and get his pick back because he got it last season. They could trade Snell to avoid losing him for free for several weeks.
Two NL Central teams chasing Fedde
The Brewers and another NL Central team, believed to be the Cardinals, are pursuing White Sox righty Erick Fedde, according to The Athletic. Fedde suffered three runs in just four innings Saturday, though he has a 3.11 ERA on the season and is second among all pitchers with 4.7 WAR. He is signed next season with a minimum salary of $7.5 million.
Fedde, 31, proved to be one of the best signings of the off-season. He renewed his arsenal with the NC Dinos of the Korea Baseball Organization last year and his success has translated to the MLB. Fedde won’t come cheap, but first base the Brewers are short on weapons. St. St. Louis is six games back in the division and just two games back of a wild card spot.
Angels’ García attracts interest
The New York Post reports that Luis García is attracting a lot of interest as the deadline approaches. The Halos traded closer Carlos Estévez to the Phillies on Saturday. García is sure to follow. The 37-year-old sinkerballer may not be a top hitter at this point in his career, but he qualifies as the third or fourth best reliever in the bullpen. He will likely be wearing the new uniform on Wednesday.
Children add Paredes
In surprise, The Cubs picked up Rays third baseman Isaac Paredes in a four-player trade with the Rays. Christopher Morel and top prospects Hunter Bigge and Ty Johnson are headed to Tampa. Chicago is listening to veteran players as the deadline approaches, including Taillon and closer Hector Neris, but Paredes is under team control through 2027 and is a long-term addition. Tampa is on a complete teardown at the deadline, it seems.
